Humans slaughter an estimated 80–90 billion land animals…

· · 21.09.2026 20:37

Humans slaughter an estimated 80–90 billion land animals annually for food, along with hundreds of billions, possibly trillions, of fish and other marine animals.
When those numbers are compared to the world’s human population of roughly 8 billion people, the result is startling: if animals somehow killed humans at the same rate, humanity would disappear in a matter of days.
Of course, this is a thought experiment rather than a literal prediction. Animals don’t organize mass hunting campaigns against humans, and most species spend their lives simply trying to survive.
The fact is meant to highlight the enormous scale of humanity’s impact on other life forms.
No species in Earth’s history has altered ecosystems, hunted wildlife, raised livestock, and harvested marine life on a scale even remotely comparable to modern humans.
