Boston told Flock to keep its camera data locked down. Flock let the whole country in anyway.
Now the city’s done with Flock for good.
Boston police ran roughly 45 Flock license plate cameras from April 1 to Sept. 4, 2025. The contract said sharing was disabled, and BPD confirmed the settings were off. Three days in, police discovered outside law enforcement agencies could pull Boston drivers’ plate and vehicle info through a nationwide lookup the vendor had switched on by mistake.
Which agencies looked? What did they search? The report doesn’t say.
Mayor Michelle Wu says the city has abandoned the system.
Turns out a contract is only as strong as a settings toggle.
