More than 83 tons of meat connected with a Georgia distributor have been recalled nationwide because the products were not properly inspected by federal authorities and were shipped with falsified USDA inspection stickers, the Department of Agriculture said. Star Meat Delivery Inc., based in Lucama, North Carolina, is recalling more than 167,000 pounds of raw pork, beef and goat products, though that number could grow as the USDA investigates. The products, produced before Sept. 22, may bear the establishment number “EST. 1363” and were shipped to Georgia distributor A&D Foods for distribution to retailers and restaurants nationwide. The issue was discovered during routine USDA checks.
No illnesses or injuries have been confirmed, but the USDA considers the products unsafe to eat and advises consumers to discard or return them. The company said it is cooperating with authorities and following recall procedures. The USDA did not immediately respond to the statement.
