105 YEARS AGO TODAY: TAMPA BAY’S WORST-CASE SCENARIO 🌀
On October 25, 1921, a powerful Category 3 hurricane slammed into the Tampa Bay area near Tarpon Springs with winds of 120 mph and a storm surge of 9–11 feet.
The storm caused widespread destruction, reshaped portions of our coastline, and left behind $10 million in damage. That was a lot for 1921.
Now imagine that same hurricane hitting Tampa Bay today.
With millions more people, densely populated coastal communities, high-rise condos, waterfront homes, and billions of dollars in infrastructure, the destruction could be catastrophic. Sadly, entire neighborhoods would be inundated by storm surge, with damage potentially reaching well over $100 billion.
The 1921 hurricane is a sobering reminder of just how vulnerable Tampa Bay remains to a direct hurricane strike.
105 years later, during a quiet hurricane season, we are reminded, despite how many storms have significantly affected the area, how lucky we have actually been. 🌀
