A record 25.2 million Americans under 35, about one in three, lived with their parents in 2025, surpassing even the pandemic-era peak, according to Realtor.com’s analysis of Census Bureau data.
The trend isn’t about a lack of jobs: roughly 70% of 25-to-34-year-olds living with parents are employed. Realtor.com’s senior economist called it “a supply story, not an employment story,” pointing to the national median home list price of $430,000 and median asking rent of $1,673, up 34 and 18% respectively since 2019.
A separate Federal Reserve report found 49 percent of adults under 30 lived with a parent last year, up 12 percentage points since 2019, and the gap between high-cost and low-cost metro areas has widened sharply over the past two decades.
