At trials held at Quantico, a robot named Alex beat the competition. According to The Defense Post on October 1, 2026, the humanoid built by the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition won the US Army’s xTechHumanoid competition.

Alex weighs about 187 pounds with its battery and features ballistic protection, impact-resilient joints, and a hybrid control system that blends AI with human operators. Army Recognition reports it was selected for experiments involving high-risk battlefield missions, alongside four supporting technologies, including power systems.

The appeal is the shape. A human-sized robot can climb stairs, go through doorways, and move through damaged buildings without the Army redesigning anything around it.

An armoured robot that can take a hit and walk through the same doors as a soldier is now part of US Army experiments. The machines are being sent first. Is that a good thing?
