Australia’s National Electricity Market reached a remarkable renewable-generation milestone. On September 18, renewables supplied 79.5% of NEM generation at 1:30 p.m., according to OpenElectricity data reported by Renew Economy.
Rooftop solar alone supplied 47.9%, while utility-scale solar contributed another 22.1% at that moment. Total renewable generation reached about 26,316 MW, compared with just over 2,000 MW from fossil fuels.
Importantly, this was a momentary generation record for Australia’s NEM, not that 79.5% of Australia’s annual electricity supply now comes from wind and solar. It shows how rapidly rooftop solar and large-scale renewable generation can reshape grid conditions during periods of strong sunlight and moderate demand.
