Robert Downey Jr. once described Mel Gibson as the friend who “kept a roof over my head” when Hollywood had turned its back on him.
After Downey was released from prison, his struggles with addiction made him difficult to insure, leaving major studios reluctant to hire him. Gibson stepped in and reportedly paid the insurance bond that allowed Downey to star in The Singing Detective.
Years later, Gibson presented Downey with a career achievement award in front of Hollywood. During his speech, Downey expressed his gratitude, saying, “He kept a roof over my head and put food on my table.”
Their friendship is a powerful reminder that you discover who your real friends are when life falls apart. When you lose your job, face illness, or go through your darkest moments, the people who stay by your side reveal their true character.
For Downey, Gibson was one of those rare friends who stood by him when much of Hollywood had given up on him.
Sometimes, the friend who helps you rebuild your life is the one you never forget.
