THIS IS SUPER EFFECTIVE FOR ULCER
Fresh cabbage juice may sound like an old-fashioned home remedy, but one early clinical report produced results that still attract attention today.
The research involved 13 hospital patients with confirmed peptic ulcers. Each patient drank freshly prepared cabbage juice throughout the day while researchers monitored healing through X-ray examinations.
Among seven patients with duodenal ulcers, the ulcer crater disappeared in an average of 10.4 days. Six patients with gastric ulcers experienced healing in an average of 7.3 days.
For comparison, medical literature cited in the paper reported average healing periods of approximately 37 days for duodenal ulcers and 42 days for gastric ulcers under the standard hospital treatments available at the time.
Researchers believed fresh cabbage contained a heat-sensitive substance capable of supporting the stomach’s protective lining and accelerating tissue repair. This proposed “anti-ulcer factor” was later popularly called vitamin U, although it is not officially classified as a vitamin.
Modern medicine now recognizes Helicobacter pylori infection and frequent use of anti-inflammatory painkillers as major causes of stomach ulcers. These usually require medical diagnosis and targeted treatment, so cabbage juice should not replace prescribed therapy.
Still, the findings remain an interesting example of how naturally occurring compounds in ordinary foods may influence the body’s repair processes—and why older nutritional discoveries sometimes deserve fresh scientific investigation.
